Letter From San Francisco
The first two paragraphs are instructions to Captain Irving of the Bark John W. Carter, who was trusted to transport the plat of San Francisco to Oregon City file it with the federal clerk there. "Take this map and file it in the Clerk's Office of the U.S. District Court for the Territory of Oregon as being entered according to act of Congress in the year 1847 in the Clerk's Office of District Court of the District of Oregon and [California Court] "be sure to enter it regardless of expense , and bring me the bill with the certificate of the clerk, that the map was filed." The letter is then signed and dated by William Eddy, the Surveyor General of San Francisco. The second half is a legal document granting Captain Irving power of attorney to file the plat on Eddy's behalf, so it begins with a proper heading. "To Capt. Irving San Francisco Nov. 9th 1849 [William] M. Eddy" The title is indicated in the first paragraph with a vertical line and the word, "Title," in the left margin for the benefit of the Court Clerk. |
